How to check and re-apply DWR on your Dope gear

What is DWR?

A Durable Water Repellent, or DWR, coating is applied to the outside of a garment, which causes water to bead up and roll off the surface, thereby preventing the fabric from becoming saturated and later damp and clammy. DWR also helps prevent staining and oil contamination, which improves water resistance and breathability as well as reducing the need for washings.

Why check your DWR?

Your DWR is a vital part of the waterproofing of your jacket. If it’s worn off, your membrane has to do all the work. A quick check will let you know it’s still functioning, so you can renew it if not, ensuring you get the best from your gear.

How to check your DWR?

Using a spray bottle, spray some cool water over your garment. If it beads up and runs off, then your DWR is working well and you’re good to go! If it soaks into the fabric, it’s time to renew. You should see pretty quickly which it is…

What do I do if my DWR is bad?

Over time, your DWR can lose effectiveness, but that doesn’t mean it’s worn away. A wash to remove any oil and contaminants on the shell of your gear, and a spin in the tumble dryer will reactivate your DWR!

So you followed our washing and tumble drying article and the DWR is still bad?

There are good treatments for home use to re-apply the DWR. We recommend Nikwax, Organotex and Granger which are all PFC-free and give good results. They all work by the method of running your jacket in the washing machine using the waterproofing instead of your normal detergent. Then you should give the jacket a spin in the tumble dryer if you have one. But always read and follow the specific instructions of your product to be sure you do it right.
