High-level waterproofness and breathability in Dope Snow gear is key to making sure our outerwear protects you on the mountain. But how do we incorporate these two fundamental pillars without harming our planet or sacrificing performance? Let’s dive in.
Waterproofing and breathability keep you dry and comfortable so you can lap the mountain all day no matter the weather. Without these elements, you become damp, sweaty, and consequently cold. The ultimate vibe killer, right?
You don’t want your vibe ruined, but you also don’t want the mountains ruined, either, right? That’s why we’ve worked tirelessly to maximize waterproofing and breathability while minimizing our impact. It’s part of our mission to help sustain the slopes. Keen to know more? Waterproofing prevents moisture and snow from penetrating the fabric, while breathability allows moisture vapor – like sweat – to escape through it. Riders need both to stay cool, dry, and comfortable on the mountain. After all, a super-breathable jacket keeps you from overheating, but it’s pretty useless without waterproofing. That’s why the best outerwear balances both features perfectly. But how can you tell how waterproof or breathable a jacket really is?
Waterproof ratings
Waterproofing is often measured in millimeters (mm), such as 15,000 mm. This is called a ‘water column’ rating, and the number refers to the height of a one-inch diameter column of water it would take to penetrate the fabric. The higher the number, the taller the column, the more water pressure there would be, and so the more waterproof the material will be.
Breathability ratings
Breathability is expressed in grams per square meter per 24 hours, like 15,000 g/m²/24 h. This indicates the amount of water vapor that can pass through a square meter of fabric over 24 hours. The higher the rating, the more breathable the fabric is. Waterproof and breathability ratings often match, such as 15,000 mm and 15,000 g.
Our super durable and effective DRY Tech construction is made to withstands slams, storm riding, and slushy laps:
We also measured Dope Snow outerwear under hydrostatic pressure to compare it with the industry standard (ISO 811-2018). FYI, the industry considers 10,000 mm as ‘good’ waterproofing. Our results? 15,000 mm! And our DWR finish further provides 100% water repellency. This combination works in tandem with features such as fully taped seams to ensure superior waterproofing as you cruise, charge, and conquer the mountain.
Breathable skiwear helps expel moisture, keeping you fresh and dry. Without breathability, sweat builds up on the skin, leaving you clammy, cold, and crying out for a change of clothes. Luckily, our outerwear features DRY Tech which contains our bluesign® APPROVED hydrophilic membrane. Alongside providing waterproof protection, this thin but powerful TPU film layer offers reliable breathability and moisture management so you stay cool ‘n’ dry all day.
We tested our bonded membrane using the JIS L1099-B1 method, where a rating of 10,000 g/m²/24h is considered ‘good’ breathability. Our outerwear exceeds the industry baseline with a rating of 15,000 g/m²/24h, providing high-level breathability during high-action days on the hill.
It’s important that Dope Snow offers next-level performance without negatively impacting our planet. That’s why we design with responsibility and sustainability in mind, incorporating partnership and initiatives, such as:
bluesign® verification
Alongside becoming a bluesign® SYSTEM PARTNER, adhering to the rigorous bluesign® SYSTEM has helped us ensure that 95% of our fabrics are bluesign® APPROVED, and our Fall/Winter 2025 collection features 100% bluesign® PRODUCTS.
PFAS-free membranes
We use a PFAS-free hydrophilic membrane to avoid destructive, environment-harming ‘forever chemicals’ in our waterproofing.
Recycled polyester
Approximately 90% of the polyester we use is made from recycled materials. Our recycled polyester yarn has 77% lower CO2 emissions and 87% lower energy use compared to virgin polyester*. (*Emissions data supplied by our supplier and third-party verified.)
Plastic-free packaging
Over 90% of our packaging is plastic-free. With the support of partners such as Billerud, we use paper mailing bags and recyclable paper sleeves.
Less waste, more riding
By creating durable, repairable designs that last, riders are less likely to purchase new outerwear and generate unnecessary waste. Initiatives such as our Renewed program also help encourage a circular economy.
Our waterproof, breathable gear helps protect you, our planet, and those mountains we love. However, we’ll never stop implementing processes that take us further. It’s part of our mission to produce protective, durable, and responsible snowwear that lasts for seasons and generations to come. Speaking of which… check out our latest innovative styles below.
