After meeting the requirements of the rigorous bluesign® CRITERIA, our outerwear jackets and pants, mid-layers, base-layers, gloves, and facemasks in the Fall/Winter 2025 collection can now be called bluesign® PRODUCTS. This globally standardized criteria helps brands, manufacturers, and chemical suppliers develop safer, more responsible products that reduce negative impacts on people and the planet, all without compromising quality or durability.

When you spot the bluesign® PRODUCT label, it means that key parts of a product’s process have been assessed and verified—from non-toxic fabrics, dyes, and chemicals to responsible suppliers, resource use, and workplace safety standards. Our own journey to being blue has helped us go green—find out how below.

What is bluesign®?

bluesign® was founded in 2000 in Switzerland by bluesign® technologies—a team of chemical experts, production pros, and workplace whizzes. Their mission? To reduce the textile industry’s environmental impact.

To do this, they created a sustainable certification system for outdoor brands, manufacturers, and chemical suppliers to follow at every stage of the production process. This system implores them to maintain the highest levels of quality and transparency through every step of their manufacturing process.

Today, the bluesign® certification is part of SGS—the planet’s leading testing, inspection, and certification company. The holistic bluesign® SYSTEM helps ensure a safer, more responsible industry by assessing over 600 environmental management points to achieve three key results:

  • 1
    Reducing environmental impact.
  • 2
Eradicating toxic chemicals that pose a risk to people and the planet.
  • 3
Ensuring the safety of workers along the whole supply chain.

And the impact of bluesign® is real. Since 2019, bluesign® SYSTEM PARTNERS have saved an estimated 6.2 billion litres of water, 773 million kilowatt-hours of energy, and 3.2 billion kilograms of carbon emissions by following the bluesign® CRITERIA and implementing the bluesign® SYSTEM.

The five principles of bluesign®

The bluesign® SYSTEM sets standards throughout the entire production process using five distinct principles:

Resource productivity

Every product needs to be made with maximum quality but minimal resources. Reviewing manufacturing processes helps reduce environmental impact.

Consumer safety

Materials and products should be high quality with no risk to human health. The bluesign® SYSTEM features the world’s strictest chemical safety requirements.

Air emissions

Exhaust air must be reduced and recycled (using ventilation systems, for example) for reduced CO2 production and tighter pollution control.

Water emission

Closed-loop water systems should be used where possible, limiting contaminated wastewater to further reduce water pollution.

Occupational health and safety

The health and safety of employees throughout the chain should be a high priority. This includes shielding workers from chemical exposure.

What is bluesign®?

How the bluesign® SYSTEM works

The bluesign® SYSTEM looks at every part of the textile’s journey from raw materials to finished products. This often requires brands and manufacturers to overhaul their factories to ensure all chemicals, processes, and materials are safe for customers, workers, and the environment.

Different categories of bluesign® approval exist within the SYSTEM, including:

bluesign® APPROVED

This refers to components that meet the bluesign® criteria, like zippers, drawstrings, or individual fabrics

bluesign® PRODUCT

This refers to a product within which at least 90% of the fabric and 30% of the components are bluesign® APPROVED

bluesign® SYSTEM PARTNER

This refers to a company that has committed to implementing the bluesign® SYSTEM throughout its processes and products

While every company and industry is different, a few milestones must be met for a brand and its products to achieve the bluesign® standard, including:

  • Undergoing an on-site assessment by bluesign® experts
  • Gaining verification that only safe chemicals, dyes, and raw materials are used
  • Working on any areas of improvement highlighted in bluesign®’s gap analysis

But the journey isn’t over once a brand reaches bluesign® SYSTEM PARTNER status. The bluesign® System encourages continuous improvements, with an ongoing roadmap, chemical product testing, full reassessment every three years, and more.

Wrapping up

As the demand for transparency and sustainability grows, certifications like bluesign® play a crucial role in transforming how textiles are made. By setting rigorous standards and encouraging continuous improvement, bluesign® helps ensure that every step in the production process respects people, the planet, and future generations. Whether you're a consumer or a brand, understanding what the bluesign® label stands for is a step toward a more responsible textile industry.
