The jacket is designed more as a shell, so layering underneath is definitely the way to go on those colder days, and it sounds like you've already figured out the sweet spot. As for the ski pass pocket, the Velcro closure is pretty tried and tested for quick access on the lifts, so glad it's feeling secure enough once you got used to it!
